The Crazy Horse Memorial is located in the Black Hills National Forest. This incredible vision of Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear began in 1947 when he invited Sculptor Korczak Zilolkowski ( who worked shortly with Gutzon Borglum on My Rushmore)to come to the Black Hills to dicuss this mammoth endeavor. Korczak started to work on Crazy Horse on June 3, 1948 with the first of many blasts. This memorial is being built "by the people" with no federal funding. The completion date is unknown due to weather conditions and financial support. Korczak died in 1982, his wife Ruth in 2014, however his children and grandchildren continue to work on this project of mass porportions.
I took a bus ride to get a closer look, most only get a profile view. I also was able to get some rocks (red granite) for my rock collection. I hope some day our grandchildren will be able to view the completed monument.
