We arrived at our campground outside of Crescent City, CA on 9-2-14 and enjoyed our stay at the Redwoods RV Park. Camping amongst these giant trees is awesome!
We rode into the park on Thursday, 9-4-14 and hiked to the Stout Grove. Some interesting facts about the Redwood National Park:
The park has no big trees, the land was purchased after the loggers took out the trees. So Jedediah Smith State Park was added to the National Park so they could say " Redwood"
The trees root system is only about 10 Feet deep, but spands out to about 500 feet. These trees only grow close to fresh water. Unfortunately the drought is affecting their water source. Rain is needed badly!
We jumped on the motorcycle to take the 90 mile trip to Crater Lake National Park. We rode on the Rogue-Umpqua National Scenic Byway. The day was sunny, not a cloud in the sky! We stopped at the many lookouts and waterfalls along the way.
The Byway leads to the north entrance of Oregon's only National Park. Crater Lake was formed when Mt. Mazama erupted 7,700 years ago. The force of this massive eruption was estimated to be 42 times greater than the 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens. At 1.943 feet it is the deepest lake in North America and the 8th deepest lake in the world! The depth and purity of the water combine to create an intense blue color!
When we arrived at Crater Lake, we couldn't get up to the North Rim fast enough! It is difficult to describe this incredible view! We couldn't stop taking pictures!
My 2.2 mile round trip hike was great! I enjoyed the trip down. Watching numerous people jumping into the frigid water was fun! I must admit it was much easier going down than hiking back up! The terrain was rocky, dusty and it was like climbing 67 flights of stairs! At times I was huffing and puffing, but it was worth it!
Crater Lake National Park is another gem of a park. It is a must see and worth the trip!
I am going to create a blog to capture our exciting adventures as Jerry and I set out to travel around this beautiful country. Our adventure begins on June 16th, 2014.
