I encourage all to take time to see this world-renowned structure! The men who built this Dam worked 7 days a week and had only two days off a year: 4th of July and Christmas Day! 96 men were killed and thousands of men worked on this project during The Great Depression. They came from all over searching for work. We have them to thank for this incredible landmark!
Solvang, California is a city in Santa Barbara County, part of Santa Ynez Valley. Solvang is Danish for "sunny fields" and was founded in 1911 by a group of Danes who traveled west to establish a Danish colony far from the cold winters of the Midwest. This city is home to numerous restaurants, bakeries and merchants offering a taste of Denmark.
We enjoyed spending time with Sheldon and Mary in Solvang. The shopping and restaurants were great!
We found a wonderful spot to camp right on the Pacific Ocean! Ventura County Parks has over 100 RV spots right on the coast! It is "dry" camping. There are no amenities except of course the most spectacular views possible! Of course with our incredible motor coach we are self-sustainable for a few days. We have a generator, water and holding tanks that allow us the opportunity to do this.
Cal Poly Universities "Soaring Stories" where books come to life in a fantasy world. This is their 67th consecutive entry in the Rose Parade. Students at these schools are responsible for the engineering, creation, financing and decoration of their float from start to finish. They also cultivated and harvested their own floral products. This is the only float in the parade that is 100-percent led by student volunteers every year!
This incredible parade started back in 1890 when Pasadena's Valley Hunt Club which wanted to promote the city's charm and beautiful weather. Invited its East Coast neighbors to a mid winter holiday, where they could watch games such as jousting, chariot races, foot races, polo and tug-of-war under the warm California sun. With the abundance of fresh flowers prompted the club to add another showcase for Pasadena's charm: a parade to precede the competition, where entrants would decorate their carriages with hundreds of blooms. In 1895, the Tournament of Roses Association formed to take charge of the festival, which had grown too large for the Valley Hunt Club.
I am going to create a blog to capture our exciting adventures as Jerry and I set out to travel around this beautiful country. Our adventure begins on June 16th, 2014.
